What does the term “live edge” mean? Live edge is a concept characterizing the lifespan of a tree in its natural setting. A live edge wood slab reveals the natural growth rings that occurred as the tree experienced drought, rapid growth, sunlight, fire, or disease. The live edge is the area under the bark between the cambium layer and sapwood. At the same time, the cambium layer is responsible for the tree’s annual growth. Each growth ring tells a story about the life of the tree…. whether it experienced years of flourishing growth or periods of distress with resultant callus or effects of a disease. Regardless of each story, the beauty of flawed perfection resides in every live edge wood slab!
